On Thursday, September 18, Minneapolis will host a new one-day intensive designed to help entrepreneurs move beyond the hustle and toward sustainable growth. The Strength & Strategy Lab, presented by Something Great and McNeal Management Inc., takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Black Business Enterprises, 1128 Harmon Place, Suite 200.

Created by business coaches Octavia Treadway and Tommy McNeal, the Lab is tailored for small business owners who have vision and drive but need the tools, structure, and clarity to turn ideas into revenue.

Why it matters

Nearly 28% of new Minnesota businesses close within their first year, according to state data. Many of those closures stem from weak planning, inexperience, or a lack of clear systems. For Black entrepreneurs, who often build without access to traditional funding, mentorship, or networks, the stakes are even higher.

The Strength & Strategy Lab addresses these gaps head-on by blending leadership discovery with hands-on strategy. โ€œWe want people to leave with more than just inspiration,โ€ Treadway said. โ€œTheyโ€™ll walk away with a roadmap they can actually use.โ€

What the Lab offers

Participants will receive:

  • CliftonStrengths Report and coaching: Pre-work and expert facilitation to identify leadership style, challenges, and opportunities
  • Interactive labs: Morning sessions focus on personal leadership strengths; afternoon sessions drill down on business strategy
  • One-page strategy roadmap: A customized plan to clarify priorities and action steps
  • Live coaching and table talks: Direct access to consultants and peers for real-time feedback
  • Networking lunch and resource showcase: Space to connect with other business owners and explore sponsor support

Who itโ€™s for

The Lab is designed for entrepreneurs who are:

  • Tired of building alone and looking for community
  • Growing but feeling stuck between vision and execution
  • Unsure of what to prioritize or how to scale
  • Seeking affordable, practical coaching without the price tag of high-ticket consulting
