On Saturday, September 13, community members are invited to the Augsburg Community Garden for a free cooking class led by chef and educator Ifrah Hashi, in partnership with Minneapolis Edible Boulevards. The event, Celebrating Our Roots, runs from 11 a.m. to noon at 606 21st Ave. S. in Minneapolis, with both in-person and Zoom options available.
The class will spotlight food justice, cultural connection, and the joy of cooking with seasonal produce grown in local gardens. Hashi will guide participants in preparing a hearty Fall Lentil Vegetable Stew, and attendees will take home the recipe to recreate it in their own kitchens.
More than a cooking class
This gathering goes beyond food preparation. Guests will learn about the cultural and nutritional value of plant-based meals while exploring how local food systems strengthen community ties. After class, participants can tour the Augsburg Community Garden to see how neighbors cultivate shared green space.
For those unable to attend live, the class will be recorded and shared โ along with the recipe โ on Facebook, YouTube, and the Minneapolis Edible Boulevards website.
Part of a larger series
This program is part of a summer-long series of classes held June through September in community gardens located in Minneapolis Green Zones. Each session features culturally rooted cooking, hands-on learning, and discussions about building equitable food systems.
The September event will be held indoors in the classroom adjacent to Augsburg Community Garden, followed by an outdoor tour.
Powered by community
The class is co-sponsored by Seward Co-op and co-hosted by the Augsburg Community Garden, reflecting a shared commitment to accessible, community-based food education.
