World-renowned ballerina Misty Copeland will bring her story, artistry, and wisdom to the Twin Cities this fall as the headliner of Talking Volumes. The celebrated literary series, presented by MPR News and the Star Tribune, takes place Sunday, September 28 at the historic Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul. Doors open at 1 p.m., with the program beginning at 2 p.m. Tickets are $35.
A Conversation Beyond the Stage
Hosted by award-winning journalist Kerri Miller, Talking Volumes is now in its 26th season of bringing acclaimed authors to the Twin Cities. Copeland will sit down for a wide-ranging conversation about her life and work, from breaking barriers in ballet to her role as a bestselling author and advocate for diversity in the arts.
In 2015, Copeland made history as the first Black woman to be named principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre in its 75-year history. She has since become an international icon, gracing stages, bookshelves, and screens with her talent and her voice for change.
Author, Advocate, and Inspiration
Copeland has written several New York Times bestsellers, including Life in Motion, Ballerina Body, Black Ballerinas, and The Wind at My Back. In 2022, she launched the Misty Copeland Foundation to expand diversity, equity, and inclusion in dance through its BE BOLD program, giving young people of color greater access to ballet and the confidence to see themselves in the art form.
Her newest children’s book, Bunheads, Act 2: The Dance of Courage, will also be part of the conversation. Inspired by Copeland’s own early ballet experiences, the story explores themes of friendship, resilience, and the courage to rise after setbacks. With its celebration of young dancers of color, the book is already being praised as a source of inspiration for children and adults alike.
