More than five years after George Floydโ€™s murder by Minneapolis police, community members continue to demand justice and systemic change. On Tuesday, October 14, at 5:30 p.m., the Twin Cities Coalition for Justice will host a public gathering at the Hennepin County Government Center (300 S. 5th St.) to honor Floydโ€™s life and legacy while calling for accountability from city and state leaders.

A Call for Change

Organizers say the action will be both a remembrance and a renewed push for reform. โ€œHis life had immeasurable value, and we continue to stand in solidarity with his loved ones,โ€ the coalition said in a statement. โ€œEmpathy for this loss is inseparable from our anger at the cityโ€™s leadership for its failure to enact substantive change.โ€

The group criticized Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Brian Oโ€™Hara for what they called โ€œstagnation, not progress,โ€ pointing to recent police-involved deaths โ€” including those of Allison Lussier and Mariah Samuels โ€” and the serious injury of David Moturi as signs that the cityโ€™s use-of-force policies remain largely unchanged.

Fighting Hate and Fear

Organizers also linked the action to what they describe as a โ€œrising tide of white supremacist hateโ€ across the nation. The coalitionโ€™s statement denounced โ€œviolent rhetoric from right-wing politiciansโ€ and condemned efforts to glorify historical figures โ€œwho spread racism and oppression against marginalized people.โ€

โ€œWe reject this glorification of hate,โ€ the statement reads. โ€œWe understand that we must fight back. We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced.โ€

Renewing the Push for Accountability

The Twin Cities Coalition for Justice also announced the relaunch of its campaign to establish a Civilian Police Accountability Commission, a charter amendment that would transfer mayoral authority over the Minneapolis Police Department to an independent community-led body. The goal is to collect enough signatures by May 1, 2026, to place the measure on the ballot.

  1. Why, why, why would anyone want to honor a drug addict? He had three times the lethal amount of drugs on his system when he succumbed to them. He was NOT murdered! Watch “The fall of Minnapolis” on YouTube to see the honest, not politicized investigation.
