As the federal government shutdown continues to delay November food benefits for thousands of Minnesota families, Hope Breakfast Bar in St. Paul is opening its doors to provide free meals for anyone in need.

Beginning Monday November 3, families can visit the restaurant at 1 Leech Street from 7 to 9 a.m., Monday through Friday, to receive hot, fresh pancakes โ€” no questions asked.

โ€œWeโ€™re not here to talk politics; weโ€™re here to care for people,โ€ the restaurant shared in a community announcement. โ€œThis isnโ€™t about sides or systems. Itโ€™s about showing up for each other. Because hope tastes a lot like a warm breakfast made with love.โ€

The effort comes as an estimated 440,000 Minnesotans, including more than 150,000 children, face uncertainty due to halted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments during the shutdown. For many, that means an immediate loss of food access starting this week.

Hope Breakfast Bar staff say the outpouring of support has been overwhelming. Families, volunteers, and neighbors have stepped up to help prepare and serve meals each morning.

โ€œWeโ€™re so grateful for our incredible team and for every family whoโ€™s shown up,โ€ the restaurantโ€™s leadership said in a follow-up post. โ€œWatching our community come together reminds us what love in action looks like.โ€

The initiative will continue until federal food resources are restored, ensuring that no one in the community goes hungry.

โ€œIf you can help, share the word,โ€ the restaurant urged. โ€œIf youโ€™re in need, please come. No judgment โ€” just hope, love, and breakfast.โ€
