Spotlighting Black Creatives in Minnesota
The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder launches On the Radar, a multi-platform series highlighting Black creatives across Minnesota. Each week, listeners, viewers, and readers explore artists’ backgrounds, inspirations, and creative processes while discovering ways to get involved in the arts. Featured artists are selected through community nominations and voting, connecting and inspiring the Black arts community statewide.
The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder is proud to launch its newest series, “On The Radar,” a multi-platform series highlighting artists across music, visual arts, literary arts, and more.
Every Thursday, a new episode will debut alongside an article and video feature. Through in-depth interviews, listeners, viewers, and readers will discover each artist’s journey, creative process, inspirations, and insights for the next generation of makers.
“On The Radar” elevates the voices of artists, makers, and storytellers whose work shapes
cultural life and community identity across Minnesota. The series aims to connect, inform, and inspire the Black arts community while offering practical ways for audiences to engage with performances, studios, and creative spaces.
Community involvement and voting
A unique feature of “On The Radar” is community participation. Artists featured on the
series are nominated by the public, who can also vote for the creatives they feel should be
recognized.
Eligible artists must live in Minnesota, be between ages 16 and 65, actively pursue a creative practice, and be willing to participate in interviews, filming, and promotion. Disciplines include but are not limited to music, visual arts, writing and poetry, filmmaking, photography, design, fashion, pottery, and other crafts.
To support long-term professional growth, this program is designed to recognize creatives whose primary career focus is their craft. We aim to amplify individuals dedicated to building a sustainable livelihood through their artistic work.
