The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder recently welcomed representatives from the City of Minnetonka for an inside look at the state’s longest-running Black-owned newspapers.
The visit, captured in the video above, offered city leaders and staff a firsthand experience of the newsroomโs history, mission, and continued impact across Minnesota communities.
A Legacy Rooted in Community
Founded in 1934 by Cecil E. Newman, the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder has spent more than 90 years documenting the stories, advocacy, and achievements of the stateโs Black community. During the tour, guests learned about the paperโs origins, its role during the Civil Rights Movement, and how it has evolved into a modern multimedia platform.
From print production to digital publishing, podcasting, and video storytelling, the tour highlighted how the newsroom continues to expand its reach while maintaining its commitment to community-centered journalism.
Understanding the Power of the Black Press
The City of Minnetonka delegation explored the editorial process, learned how stories are developed, and engaged in conversations about the responsibility of media in shaping public dialogue.
Tours at MSR are designed not just to showcase operations, but to provide context about the importance of the Black press in holding institutions accountable, elevating underrepresented voices, and preserving community history.
