New Edition Led the Rock Hall Fan Vote by a Landslide. They Still Did Not Get In.
New Edition earned more than one million fan votes to lead all nominees for the 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction class, but the Boston R&B legends were not among those selected as the Hall announced its class of Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan.

New Edition made history as first-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees this year, leading the fan vote by a wide margin with over one million votes. But when the 2026 induction class was announced Monday night during a live episode of American Idol, the Boston-bred R&B legends were not among those called.
The class of 2026 includes Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan. The induction ceremony is set for Nov. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will air on ABC in December.
New Edition, whose members are Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant, earned 1,022,683 fan votes, roughly 120,000 more than second-place finisher Phil Collins. Despite that commanding lead, the fan vote counts as only a single ballot alongside more than 1,200 ballots cast by artists, historians, and music industry professionals.

Rock Hall President and CEO Greg Harris addressed the gap between fan enthusiasm and the final outcome directly. “The fan vote is not automatic entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Harris said. “It counts for only one single ballot in the grand scheme of things.”
For the Black community, the omission stings. New Edition formed more than 40 years ago in Boston’s Orchard Park housing projects and went on to define a generation of R&B music. Their influence extended far beyond the group itself, launching the solo careers of Bobby Brown and Johnny Gill and giving rise to New Jack Swing through Bell Biv DeVoe. Their music shaped Black culture in the 1980s and 1990s in ways that are still felt today.
The other nominees who did not make the 2026 class include the Black Crowes, Jeff Buckley, Mariah Carey, Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, INXS, Pink, and Shakira.
This was New Edition’s first nomination. They remain eligible for future consideration.
