With summer arriving and the weather warming, Minnesotans are spending more time outside in parks, neighborhoods, and public spaces. Families gather for cookouts, children play later into the evening, and residents take full advantage of the longer days. That increased activity in community spaces also brings a greater responsibility to ensure those places remain safe and secure. Communities should embrace tools that help law enforcement respond faster when danger appears and give officers better information when every minute matters. License plate reader cameras are one of those tools, offering a practical way to support criminal investigations and help protect the people who call our neighborhoods home.

License plate reader technology is a straightforward but powerful resource that can become one of the most important pieces of a criminal investigation. These systems capture license plate information and visual vehicle details, which assist law enforcement in quickly identifying a suspect vehicle when time is critical. Speed is everything when searching for a vehicle connected to a crime. In most criminal investigations, officers do not have access to a suspect’s name, but in many cases they do have a vehicle description. Law enforcement leaders frequently note that more than 70% of crimes involve a vehicle, which means a vehicle description or license plate number may be one of the most useful leads investigators have. When a vulnerable person goes missing or a car is stolen, the ability to identify or locate a wanted vehicle can turn hours into minutes and give officers a critical advantage when every second counts.

As the founder of the Sanneh Foundation, I take public safety extremely seriously. The Sanneh Foundation is dedicated to the well-being of all people, ensuring everyone can enjoy their summer safely. Good health and well-being begin with communities having a sense of safety in their neighborhoods, parks, and other public spaces. Every community deserves safety and security in the places where residents live, learn, and play. Parks and neighborhood streets should feel welcoming, and license plate reader technology can help create that atmosphere.

Residents and their families deserve the comfort of bringing their children safely to parks, community centers, and neighborhood events without the worry of an auto crime nearby. This technology helps law enforcement officers respond swiftly and adds an extra layer of security and reassurance for community members while they enjoy public spaces.

License plate reader technology can also deter criminals before they strike. When criminals know that law enforcement can identify vehicles connected to serious offenses, they are more likely to think twice. These cameras can also help officers piece together timelines, confirm leads, and coordinate across jurisdictions more effectively when dealing with high-profile auto crimes.

License plate reader cameras are not about replacing law enforcement or common-sense safety practices. They give law enforcement another reliable tool to help respond when someone is reported missing or a vehicle connected to a serious crime has entered a neighborhood. This technology can strengthen the safety net around our property and loved ones and help residents feel more confident that their communities are prepared to act when it matters most.

If we are serious about protecting our communities and supporting the officers and organizations working to keep them safe, we should be willing to use proven tools that improve response time and strengthen public safety.
