A visit to the Bonna Educational Complex in Ghana sparked an international mission to give children access to books that reflect their culture, identity, and limitless potential here in Minnesota.

St. Paul–based Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute (PPGJLI) invites individuals, businesses, schools, and publishers to help build a new children’s library filled with books featuring characters from the African Diaspora.

“Every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories they read,” said Felix Appiah, PPGJLI Ghana Director.

“When children recognize themselves in books, they build confidence, strengthen their sense of identity, and begin to imagine futures without limits. A child who loves reading today becomes a leader tomorrow.”

How to support the movement

  • Donate new children’s books that celebrate African Diaspora characters.
  • Make a financial contribution to purchase culturally responsive titles.
  • Share the campaign with your network, schools, and book clubs.
