The Minnesota Black Community Project (MBCP) is hosting a free screening of its new documentary, Spotlight on Minnesota’s Triumphant African American Community. The film offers a look at 21st-century Black achievement across key sectors, including business, education, healthcare, public service, entertainment, and the arts.
The documentary is built on the groundbreaking work of the late Walter R. Scott Sr., a pioneering publisher who highlighted local Black leaders during the pre- and post-Civil Rights eras. For over three decades, Scott was a publisher of three landmark publications: the Centennial Edition of the Minneapolis Beacon (1956), Minneapolis Negro Profile (1968) and Minnesota’s Black Community (1976).
The screening takes place at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Copies of the documentary and books from both MBCP and the Walter R. Scott Sr. archive will be available for purchase at the screening.
