In the words of Marvin Gaye, “What’s Going On?” As much as I want to believe “hair is just hair,” I realize more and more it is not. Styling our hair is a gift to self! One fact I know: Whether a woman is White, Black, Latina, Asian or Native American, we all will struggle […]

‘No Perm for Me’
On Saturday, June 4, 2016, Sister Spokesman had their Fourth Annual Loving Your Hair event, where the theme was “Generations of Curls.” The goal is to create and leverage platforms to educate African American women on natural hair care, providing tools and resources as she navigates through her natural hair journey. Collectively, sistahs unite to […]
Men and natural hair — it’s a real thing
For decades, African American women have been run through the ringer because of how they style their hair. It doesn’t’ matter whether it has been worn in weaves, wigs or braids, somewhere Black women can be found at the butt of a joke.
Cut it and it will grow
Curl friends, all too often in our hair journey we sacrifice length over the health of our hair. A major culprit that will set you back is the dreaded split ends. It is a challenge to grow hair healthy or long when your ends are frazzled and jagged.
Curl Talk: White stylist can do Black textured hair?
Although I can’t speak on all White hair stylists, I can give a shout out to one Ms. Carolyn Long from Uptown Curl. In planning the July 11, 2015 Sister Spokesman Loving Your Hair event, I had several people refer many stylists to me. Out of the five stylists selected, four were Black and one White, whom I never met prior.

True testament of curl-friends dissecting strands in the name of Loving Your Hair: A couple of hair enthusiasts with passion and vision on providing additional hair-care tips teamed up to combine their time, talents, and love of all things hair with a startup business called Techturized.
Curl-friends: Hot oil is not just for cooking!
If you have never tried a hot oil treatment, try it at least once. It is an easy process that can be done at home safely.
For best results, it is recommended to do this treatment before you wash your hair. Hot oil treatments before a shampoo can become your secret weapon in preventing dandruff and dry scalp. It can also smooth the cuticle, soften dry rough hair, and help to seal in moisture.
Natural hair curlfriend gone rouge
On June 13, 2014 a young lady named Jasmine Toliver, who has natural hair, decided to create a petition with the Change.org page asking Beyonce and Jay-Z to comb their two-year-old daughter Blue Ivy’s hair.
Hair loss or damage — did I do that?
How many of you have heard people say, “Sometimes you endure the pain to be beautiful”? Is the consequence behind the pain truly worth it? There are many health issues one may encounter that can cause hair loss and damage that are totally out of our control. However, there are many actions within our control that can cause hair loss and damage.
Hair it is: Straight or natural, learn to love it
Why does it seem like such a challenge to enjoy our natural abundance of strands growing on top of our heads? Doesn’t it seem odd how we can perpetuate the division amongst Black women down to the very follicle? It’s nearly impossible to make collective cosmetic changes without society and others forcing their social issues […]
Natural hair: trend, or movement?
It gets deep when you have to define or categorize the hair strands that grow out of your scalp. Where should our natural hair fit into this society in which we live today in 2014? This makes me think of talk show host Arsenio Hall when he said, “the things that make you go ‘hummmmmm.’” […]
Natural hair terms — I feel bilingual!
I can remember when I first went natural three years ago and started watching YouTube. As I listened in excitement to learn how to care for my hair, I could have sworn those girls were talking another language.
Don’t stress the tresses in cold weather
Conditioning, protection help hair bear the winter What is predictable, cold and lasts long? If you said a Minnesota winter, you got it right. You can feel the fall season in the air, temperatures dropping giving us cooler air that will ramp up quickly into our blustery winter very soon. Different seasons require different hair […]
Respect the tresses
How many times have you combed your hair or watched someone comb their hair so hard the head shakes like one of those bobble-head dolls? That, my friends, can produce major stress to the scalp and hair, creating hair damage. As Diana Ross & the Supremes would say, “Stop! in the name of love,” followed […]
‘Good hair’ is healthy hair
Hats off to the May Sister Spokesman event with the theme of “Loving Your Hair.” Many women shared the feedback that bringing attention to hair care in that forum was fun, educational, informative and appreciated. I was in the house as well, and the panel had the women engaged, responding to questions from hair history […]
Coming back to natural
Introducing a new MSR column that will answer all your questions on returning to natural hair In the Beginning there was a curl. I’m talking about our “Afro-textured hair,” and make no mistake about it, we were all born with natural hair…sometimes called nappy, kinky, coily, curly and even straight with intent to curl. The “Bergamot grease […]
