About the Film

Farming While Black tells the story of a rising generation of young Black farmers finding strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism and its potential to shape a more just and sustainable future.

The film features Leah Penniman, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm and author of Farming While Black, who reflects on the plight of Black farmers in the United States. At their peak in 1910, Black-owned farms represented 14 percent of all farms in the country. Today that number has fallen to less than 2 percent. Penniman and her compatriots are working to change that, cultivating a new generation of Black farmers rooted in history and driven by purpose.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, this screening is an invitation to reflect on freedom, food, resilience, and the future we are growing together.

Frogtown Park and Farm, 946 Minnehaha Ave. W., St. Paul, MN. Friday, June 19. Gather at 8:30 p.m., film begins at dusk. Free and open to all.
