Overview: Handcrafted home fragrances spark memories and style in Minnesota

MSR's Lizzy Nyoike profiles local entrepreneur Chay’La Hart, founder of Flame Reaction Candle Co. The story explores Hart’s journey in building her home fragrance business, her artistic approach to candle design, and the best-selling scents transforming spaces across the Twin Cities.

Chay’La Hart says fragrances can spark memory, change a mood and turn an ordinary space into a place that feels like home. That idea birthed Flame Reaction Candle Co., a Twin Cities-based business that creates handcrafted candles, incense, room sprays, and other home fragrance products designed to be as visually striking as they are aromatic.

Now, nearly two years after launching her business, Hart continues to grow her brand while introducing new products and refining what she describes as an artistic approach to home fragrance.

Hart says nearly everything is produced in-house, from pouring candles to designing and printing product labels, allowing her to maintain consistency while creating a brand identity.

“Everything is handmade,” she said. “Certain things we get imported from other handmade businesses, but mostly everything is made in-house all the way down to the labels so everything is designed and printed in-house.”

Designed to stand out

While other candle companies focus primarily on fragrance, Hart wanted her business to offer something that catches people’s attention before the candle is ever lit.

Her original candle designs were intentionally decorative, meant to serve as home decor while filling a room with fragrance.

“What inspired my business is the love for scent,” Hart said. “Initially, I started with candles and candles. I don’t have them here today, but they look really decorative, almost double as home decor. Decorating my space, feeling nice and cozy in my home with a good smell is what inspired the whole thing.”

Navigating the challenges of small business

According to Flame Reaction Candle Co., every fragrance is crafted to create an emotional connection while each candle is designed to serve as both functional decor and a conversation piece. The company emphasizes community sustainability and creativity by using coconut soy wax, wooden wicks and reusable or recyclable vessels when possible.

However, like building any other business, Hart says it comes with its own challenges and learning curves.

Hart says much of her growth has happened behind the scenes through trial and error. Managing inventory, transporting heavy products and supplies to events and creating systems that keep the business organized have become just as important as developing new scents.

“A lot of new learning experiences come from owning a business,” she said. “Learning how to travel with such heavy products, creating systems and knowing what inventory to bring to different markets has really helped me build the business.”

Customer favorites and ongoing innovation

Today, Flame Reaction Candle Co. offers several different fragrances, but Hart says a few have become customer favorites. Her all-time best-selling scent is Cereal Killer, while Amber & Rosewood and Lavender Haze have recently seen growing popularity among customers.

Even with a growing product lineup, Hart says innovation remains one of her favorite parts of entrepreneurship. She is constantly testing new ideas and experimenting with products that complement the existing collection.

“I’m actually always in the testing phase,” Hart said. “It’s constant that new products are coming in.”

Though Flame Reaction Candle Co. is based in the Twin Cities, customers can shop online or connect with the company at flamereactioncandleco.com.

As the business continues to grow and introduce new products and collections, Hart says the goal is to continue creating home fragrance products that are memorable and help customers make every space feel uniquely their own.
