In this week’s episode of Blacklight on Sports, we sit down with Tracy Byrd, an inspiring educator and track and field coach at Minneapolis Washburn High School. Recently named the 2024 Minnesota Teacher of the Year, Byrd shares his unique journeyโfrom leaving a career in finance to pursuing his true passion for teaching and coaching.
Tracy Byrd’s path to education is one of determination, passion, and transformation. After working in the financial sector, he made the bold decision to shift careers in 2008. He began his new journey in the Wayzata School District, taking on roles as a hall supervisor and coach in both football and track and field. It was during this time that Byrd realized his calling was in education, which led him to pursue a teaching degree.
In 2017, Byrd completed his teaching credentials at Metropolitan State University, and his journey came full circle when he returned to his alma mater, Minneapolis Washburn, to teach ninth-grade English and coach track and field. Byrdโs dedication to his students and athletes, along with his positive impact in the community, has led to his well-deserved recognition as Minnesota’s Teacher of the Year.
