Health is something we all hope to be blessed to have — you can never take it for granted. For Tiger Woods, the last few years have been a long blur of back surgeries, painful workouts, rehabbing, and reading that he’s washed up and can’t play anymore. Physically, he has not been able to play […]

Turning Point Gala honors commitment to a vital service
Nothing so virulently plagues African America as chemical dependency. It destroys individuals and families across class, whether the sufferer’s a street drunk or junkie, white collar professional or even, as history notes, a metropolitan mayor. Accordingly, lifesaving institution Turning Point, Inc. is a vital community resource. This month’s Honors Gala, therefore, is more than the organization […]

Donald Trump and the death penalty: Black America be on the alert
President Donald Trump made a very controversial promise about punishment in America: to provide the death penalty for leading drug dealers, despite many studies suggesting not only that the death penalty is not an effective deterrent, but worse, that it is not applied fairly to people of color. Yet, after conversations with the Chinese president […]
A Black girl’s take on ‘A Wrinkle in Time’
A Wrinkle in Time was a must-see film for me, and a must-see flick worldly different from dashing out to see Black Panther. It doesn’t mean, however, Ava Duvernay’s $100 million film with a multicultural cast isn’t without problems. It is, which is one reason why the film has received mixed reviews — unlike Black Panther’s […]

Personal hair journey powers local playwright’s ‘Kinks’
Few things, on the face of it, are more innocuous than the hair on one’s head. However, so far as social issues go, the hair on a Black woman’s head is far from an idle consideration. Indeed, reaction thereto can be subtle, yet far-reaching discrimination. All one needs to verify this is to note that there […]

For the first time in six years, Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) saw graduation rates rise above 70 percent. Nearly 73 percent of Minneapolis students graduated within seven years. It is the highest seven-year graduation rate on record for the school system, which is substantial given the diverse student populations MPS serves. The average four-year graduation rate across the district’s 10 largest high schools rose to 72 percent. District-wide, the four-year graduation rate was […]
