Community inaugurates Black history-themed MLK playground

Community members got their first taste of a new interactive playground centered around the Civil Rights Movement and African American history on Saturday, August 22 at MLK Jr. Park in South Minneapolis. The playground launch was the focal point of this year’s Celebrate Our Beloved Community event and the latest in ongoing park renovations following the rededication of the Freedom Form II sculpture in August of 2014.

PHOTOS | #BlackLivesMatter protest in St. Paul

Over 200 people gathered at Hamline Park in St. Paul August 10 to protest the use of lethal force by police officers. The protest came a day after the one-year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, whose fatal shooting by police​ led to days of rioting in Ferguson, MO and sparked the national Black Lives Matter movement.

On July 11, over 200 Sister Spokesman attendees gathered for Sister Spokesman: “Loving Your Hair” at The Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. The event showcased the diverse styling and care expertise from local hair stylists with a hair show, a Q&A, games and prizes, and a special performance by local singing sensation Ashley DuBose.
