On Saturday, October 3, Sister Spokesman: Pink Fest — Sisterhood of Survival gathered community members and expert panelists to discuss issues surrounding cancer and to celebrate cancer survivors at Arnellia’s in St. Paul. Attendees also enjoyed the soulful stylings of Johnnie Brown, who gave a preview of his upcoming Teddy Pendergrass tribute.

On Saturday, August 29, hundreds of community members gathered for the Urban League’s “Family Day,” an annual celebration in North Minneapolis. Established in 1989, the event was created with the aim of uniting families in the community with noon to dusk festivities, including an urban festival, marketplace and resource fair.

A large and very diverse crowd made its way to the Great Minnesota Get-Together on its final day. A total of 178,867 people attended on Labor Day, September 7, breaking the previous record for Labor Day attendance set back in 2013.

An estimated 300 – 400 people gathered at Hamline Park in St. Paul Saturday, August 29 for Black Fair, an event hosted by Black Lives Matter. The march started at Hamline Park and proceeded down Snelling Avenue to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
Community inaugurates Black history-themed MLK playground
Community members got their first taste of a new interactive playground centered around the Civil Rights Movement and African American history on Saturday, August 22 at MLK Jr. Park in South Minneapolis. The playground launch was the focal point of this year’s Celebrate Our Beloved Community event and the latest in ongoing park renovations following the rededication of the Freedom Form II sculpture in August of 2014.

Over 200 people gathered at Hamline Park in St. Paul August 10 to protest the use of lethal force by police officers. The protest came a day after the one-year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, whose fatal shooting by police led to days of rioting in Ferguson, MO and sparked the national Black Lives Matter movement.

On May 20 the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder (MSR), now in its 80th year of publication, and its nonprofit namesake the MSR 501c3, hosted the 20th annual High School Graduation Celebration at the Metropolitan Ballroom located in Golden Valley. As in previous years, the Celebration echoed its traditional theme “Education and Graduation: It’s a family affair.”
